Hugo Engelen, a prominent figure in the world of water ski racing, embarked on his journey as an integral part of the Bertels clan, marrying Mariette, the sister of Gaston Bertels, founder of the Viersel Waterski Club. His destiny was intertwined with the sport from the outset, and he naturally became deeply involved.
Hugo commenced his waterskiing odyssey as an observer for his brother-in-law, actively participating in towing accomplished skiers like Manuella Swinnen and a budding talent named Danny Bertels, who would later ascend to the title of World Champion. This collaboration unfolded during the era of the iconic Fletcher boat no. 1, a vessel that became synonymous with their waterskiing endeavors.
As one of the founding members of the Viersel Waterski Club and a pivotal figure in the IWSF (now IWWF) World Racing Council, Hugo played an instrumental role in laying the groundwork for the inaugural World Waterski Racing Championship in 1979 in Great Britain. His dedication extended for some 20 years, leaving an indelible mark on the global waterskiing landscape.
Hugo's commitment wasn't confined to the international stage; he also served as Belgium's representative in the E&A Racing Council until 2002, earning respect as a national and international judge. In the realm of Belgian waterskiing, Hugo succeeded Vera Van den Bossche as President of the Flemish waterski federation LFWS / WSV, contributing to its growth and strength.
A key player in the organisation of two World Championships in Belgium (1995 and 2009), Hugo's impact on the sport reached new heights. His dedication was recognized with the prestigious title of Honorary member of EAME (now E&A) in 1998. Beyond his waterskiing achievements, Hugo was a successful businessman and a devoted husband and father, leaving an enduring legacy in both his personal and professional life.
